futureDJ Technology

Curated by Alchemy Audio Lab

The futureDJ event began life as a typically hair-brained scheme in the mind of Futuresonic04 artistic director, Drew Hemment, and was transformed into reality by Alchemy Audio Lab's Andrew Diey. Working with a roll call of the leading developers of advanced sound technology, the event looks at how gestural and touch sensitive interfaces can transform the art of the DJ - "playing other people's music" as you have never seen or heard it before.

TC Electronic is a pro-audio equipment manufacturer that has been at the forefront of signal processing technology since their inception in 1976. Since that time, TC Electronic has continued to deliver consistently high-performing products aimed squarely at the audio professional. In the mid-1990s TC released the Finalizer™ onto a studio market riding the wave of ever-accessible technology, and today TC Electronic strive to continue designing and manufacturing tools, not toys, for all audio professionals – be they working at Abbey Road Studios or in their bedroom at 12 Abbey Road…

"Futuresonic provides TC with the opportunity to help musicians push technology further, much like our recent surround work at the SONAR festival in Barcelona. Using effects and creating surround sound mixes with the live performers at FutureSonic suggests an evolving multi-media technology opportunity, one which TC is very excited about!"

Traktor Finalscratch is a groundbreaking hardware-software combination that allows digital music files on a computer to be controlled and mixed live using two turntables and a mixer. Soundbeam® is a device which uses ultrasonic sensors to detect at a distance of up to six meters without physical contact - the direction, speed, and distance of physical movements, translating this into MIDI for the real time manipulation of both audio and visual material. www.soundbeam.co.uk. FinalScratch® allows mixing of digital audio files, controlled with any DJ turntable. The FS10K package includes three special vinyl records, the Scratch Amp to connect the computer to your existing turntable/mixer setup, and the Final Scratch software. An FS10K system, which supports 2 turntables, includes the Final Scratch software, the Scratch amp, and 2 FS vinyl records. Just load any digital audio file onto your computer, then pick and choose from your own playlist. Your computer becomes your record box. As well for the professional, save and load any production, remix, or new edit you have created and play it that very moment or take it to gig the same night without the need to cut an acetate or make test pressings.

The concept of the KAOSS Pad is brilliantly simple – as you move your finger around the pad you are controlling many sophisticated aspects of a powerful effects processor. Move your finger left to right and you control certain aspects of the sound. Move it up and down and you control other parameters. Make an arc and you bring in even more changes. All you need to do is glide across or tap on the pad to make evocative changes to your mix, producing a level of complexity that would be impossible to achieve with any other system or controller. The super-charged KP2 KAOSS Pad evolved from the uniquely original KP1 and is packed with ground-breaking effects, new sampling functions and a host of cool, user-inspired features.
