EVNT Competition
2005 is the first year of a new competition for up-and-coming and adventurous events, in which Futuresonic offers funding to three event organisers to stage an event as a part of the EVNT Showcase. Submissions were assessed by an independent jury (see website for details) on the basis of artistic innovation and excellence, originality of the event, and the degree to which the award is likely to have a lasting impact.
Two of the successful events involved a strong audiovisual component. One of these, Blowout presents "Music For The Moving Image", was supported because it was a new artistic departure for one of Manchester’s leading new and emerging promoters, who has previously worked mainly in music rather than visual media. The other, Interruption 2, is by a group with a background in visual art and experimental short film, here presenting new collaborations between filmmakers from around the UK and improvising musicians, offering a fresh and inventive take on an established format. The third event, aLECTRO_eCOUSTIC presents Stroll, involves a tour around sound installations situated in a number of non-conventional spaces, and stood out because of the originality of the concept, and the integrity of the approach.
