A dancefloor utopia for the swelling ranks of a new generation of disco fiends, with sets from disco alchemist Danielle Baldelli and revered Manchester spinner James Holroyd in the opulent environs of the Deaf Institute. This evening will celebrate the DJ as auteur and educator, featuring figures who have irreversibly changed the musical landscape of their respective arenas through consistent and headstrong selections, carving out their own groove for the rest of the dancefloor to follow, with Baldelli operating in late 70's/early 80's Italy at the seminal Cosmic club, and Holroyd commanding dancers at hallowed Northern clubs Bugged Out! and Back to Basics. Support for this event comes from the obsessive collectors and Mancunian collective behind the Cosmic Disco blog and radio show.
Danielle Baldelli
As the legend goes, Danielle Baldelli started his career as a disc jockey in 1969 when he was offered the job of ‘putting on the records' at the Tana Club Discotheque. He gained recognition for his acute selection skills and was soon driving dancers wild at the Tabu Club and Baia Degli Angelli which lead to his residency at Cosmic, the legendary club on the shores of Lake Garda in Northern Italy. The club lent its name to his poly-style stew of early electronics, krautrock, American disco and funk and soul imports mixed in revolutionary style with four turntables, two mixers and drum machines or live percussion, opening dancers minds and bodies to infinite rhythmic permutations. Baldelli is a true maverick and is equally influential as his NYC counterparts David Mancuso or Nicky Siano.
James Holroyd
James Holroyd requires little introduction to Manchester dancers. With a background controlling the decks at Bugged Out! and Basics, James progressed to become the Chemical Brothers DJ of choice enabling him to spread his house and techno groove to the rest of the world. He'll be plucking out his favourite disco joints for this special trip into the history of the legendary style.
