I-Task
I-TASC is a decentralized network of individuals and organisations working collaboratively in the fields of art, engineering, science and technology. Its main concerns are the interdisciplinary development and tactical deployment of renewable energy, waste recycling systems, sustainable architecture and open-format, open-source media. It is an official project of the International Polar Year 2007-2008- a large scientific programme focused on the Artic and the Antarctic.
What was the significant innovation in approach or thinking behind the project/artwork? How can this be recognisably attributed to the involvement of creative practice?

It is an official project of the International Polar Year 2007-2008- a large scientific programme focused on the Artic and the Antarctic.
What were the disciplinary contributors to the project? What model of research / development was followed? What were factors leading to success / problems?
Its first project LADOMIR established a mobile research unit in the Arctic and Antarctica that created the framework conditions for collaborative projects between artists, scientists, tactical media workers and engineers within three broad topical fields: migration, weather and communications.
Other projects carried out in the Artic include Polar Radio, a community radio station that aims to create radio phonic links between communities who live at the poles and Antarctic Data Jam, a collaboration with Mediashed that used PureData to resample the weather data sent from the Artic.
What were the outcomes of the project? How were these disseminated to outside stakeholders? What models of value are implied by this project? What was the Impact of the work?
ITASC is a project built around the principles of the Antarctic Treaty and goals of the IPY, and is specifically geared to bring South African and international artists, scientists and engineers into collaboration around issues affecting the polar regions and the planet as whole, and to communicate the resulting research to audiences around the world. As such ITASC is fully committed to the data-sharing and open research culture that has underpinned the successes of International Polar Years past and present in advancing knowledge, awareness and peace in Antarctica.
