Will Edmondes
Artist
Will Edmondes is an improvising composer who performs with voice, samplers and dictaphones. In 1980 he founded the legendary Radioactive Sparrow, a non-rehearsing, total-improv outfit he led (with Tony Gage) until 2003. He studied composition with Anthony Powers (Cardiff, BMus), Robert Keeley (Kings, London, MMus) and William Brooks (York, PhD).
Edmondes' work focuses the axis of improvisation and collage. Its research imperative (practical and theoretical) is to establish that collage and improvisation are essentially the same thing: collage is the improvisation of means and materials; improvisation the impromptu assembly of gesture and expression into what is perceived as a continuity, whether experienced 'live' or as a reproduction. Will's compositional method is informed by the identification of common approaches in Hip Hop, free improvisation and collage (especially in the Merzbilder of Kurt Schwitters'). There is, however, no single means of exploring this axis. In order to partition various diverse methods, Will has long separated his output into stylistically distinct character roles, each of which bears a different moniker.
