James Wallbank
CEO, Access Space
James Wallbank is an artist, activist and social entrepreneur who has worked across the fields of the creative arts, computer recycling, open source software and peer-learning communities. In the 90's the trash-tech arts group he founded, "Redundant Technology Initiative" was so overwhelmed with the potential of the hundreds of recycled computers they'd recovered, they realised that they had to get the public involved. In 2000 RTI opened "Access Space", a walk-in, open access media lab posing the question "What creative things can you do with all this technology?" Since then Access Space has remained open for five days a week for most of the year, making it one of the longest lived open access internet learning centre in the UK. Combining creative projects with trailing-edge hardware, open source software, a peer-learning ethos and a strong sense of community, Access Space's model has proved to be robust and dirt-cheap. Now Access Space is wondering how more organisations can learn from its unconventional approach to ICT in the community.
