Freewear: The Manchester Collection

Freewear is a workshop dedicated to create clothes out of free materials provided by the city. Using Freecycle - an on-line network of free economy - participants will search, ask and pick up the goods needed to produce a wardrobe collection. Freewear aims to discover the city of Manchester and engage with their people by refusing to consume and celebrating the reuse of resources. Using an on-line community as a starting point, participants will uncover the moneyless layer of the city while reclaiming resources and a little bit of power too.

Potential givers of notions, cloth, sewing machines, etc will be found online in advance. Participants will take part in this process, so that they learn how to freecycle and its basic rules. As we collect the goods we will use free city maps to document the locations we visit to pick the materials. As we visit different homes, we will let them know what we are going to do and invite them to our eventual fashion show. Once we collect the materials needed to produce the clothes, we will hold an all day session to create the clothes and finally the next day make a fashion gathering to launch the Freewear Manchester Collection. Makers, freecyclers and people in general will be invited to participate and exchange the stories embedded in each piece. We will share experiences, get to talk about new hoods and point at them in our maps, talk about the people and how they look, what they said, the places we passed by, etc.... This will be the new catwalk for a type of fashion that has the city - as a source and as a medium- embedded in it's process.
